This newsletter was formerly named Alaskan History, and originally it was Alaskan History Magazine, when I was editing and publishing that journal of northern history. Now I’ve completely revised it for my book publishing company, Northern Light Media.
I have changed and updated all of the relevant data, including the logo, and the new URL linking to the site should be in your search bar. Not much else will change, and the content will remain close to the same. You’ll be seeing these emails more often, as I share my latest writing projects, the new books I’m publishing, video projects I’ve done or currently working on, and of course the books I’ve already published, all of which are available at my website or on Amazon, and always through your local bookstore or library (ask for interlibrary loan).
For those who are not already familiar with my work, a brief introduction:
My name is Helen Hegener, and through my company, Northern Light Media, I’ve published more than a dozen nonfiction books about the history of Alaska, with subjects as diverse as the railroads, roadhouses, revenue cutter service, gold rush history, historic sled dog races and more. I’ve published not only my own writings, but wonderful books such as Gary Stein’s biography of Dr. James Taylor White, a surgeon with Alaska’s early Revenue Cutter Service; and Lew Freedman’s 50 Years of Iditarod Adventures, detailing the first half-century of the Last Great Race. Lew has just written another great book which I’m publishing very soon, more about that later.
Northern Light Media was founded in the fall of 2007 to produce a documentary video, Appetite and Attitude, about the legendary long distance sled dog racer Lance Mackey. The following spring Northern Light Media was hired to produce and publish a book about the centennial running of the All Alaska Sweepstakes, and that book is still the only one available about the sled dog race which made Scotty Allan and Leonhard Seppala famous.
My most recent book, The History of Sled Dogs in North America, is a large format full color tribute to these amazing animals and their legendary history of hauling the mail, gold, freight, passengers and more. The first reviewer at Amazon gave the book five stars and declared it “the gold standard for sled dog books!”
Over the past 15 years I have given presentations about my books at the Alaska State Fair, the Palmer Historical Society, the University of Alaska, Fireside Books in Palmer, Jitters Coffeehouse in Eagle River, the Talkeetna Roadhouse, the Susitna River Lodge, radio, television, and many other venues. I have also written articles for Alaska Magazine, Last Frontier Magazine, Alaska Dispatch, Alaskan History Magazine, Mushing Magazine, The Frontiersman, and many others. Sharing the amazing stories of northland history is my passion and my joy!
All of my books are available from my website, and at Amazon, and through your favorite independent bookstore, whether that’s a website or a real ‘bricks and mortar’ store. Follow Northern Light Media on Facebook to see what’s next, and you can contact me via email at helenhegener@gmail.com
